<p>Gambling by senior citizens has surged in states that have legalized and glamorized various forms of wagering from state lotteries, bingo racinos, and slot parlors to casino gambling.</p>
<p>A senior citizen may daydream about gambling to escape reality and think that gambling is his or her most exciting activity. Many hours are often spent involved in gambling activities.</p>
<p>For most seniors, gambling is entertainment, pure and simple. It&#8217;s a chance to escape with friends, get away from day to day stresses and have fun. Winning money is a bonus, not the primary objective. Most seniors who gamble continue to take care of their health and financial obligations.</p>
<p>Some older residents may gamble to excess after the death of a spouse or after retiring and losing the sense of worth they felt when they were working. They may have outlived many friends and family members or be separated by large geographical distances from children.</p>
<p>For a growing number of seniors, gambling is a losing enterprise. More time and attention are needed as the gambler attempts to win back what he/she has lost. If the losses continue, the gambler may sell possessions or property to cover expenses, or seek risky or high interest loans.</p>
<p>Problem gambling is a progressive addiction characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to play more frequently, or the irritability when attempting to stop plus, loss of control.</p>
<p>Compulsive gambling is not discriminatory. The percentage of female gamblers is on the rise. Compulsive gambling is a progressive behavior disorder characterized by a psychologically uncontrollable preoccupation and urges to gamble.</p>
<p>Most women tend to be escape gamblers. They prefer casino, lottery and Bingo types of gambling Experts on compulsive gambling are alarmed. They worry that senior gamblers, many of them on fixed incomes, are more vulnerable to financial devastation than younger gamblers and less willing to seek timely help for addiction.</p>
<p>A 35 year-old can recoup their losses over time. But, a 65 -70-year-old stands to lose everything, they&#8217;re done. Their lives will crumble in front of them. They may not be able to recoup the financial loss.</p>
<p>Even critics of the gambling industry concede that casinos make seniors feel welcome. Surveys indicate that casino outings are the most popular day trip for retired Americans. Senior gamblers merit special attention because the consequences of compulsive gambling can be so severe.</p>

<p>Some do not want to be told what to do it&#8217;s insulting and demeaning to suggest you shouldn&#8217;t be doing this because you&#8217;re too old.</p>
<p>For those senior citizens who do choose to gamble, the data shows that the vast majority of them come to casinos for the social interaction. Fun and entertainment, not gambling, is their primary motivation. Seniors see casinos as an &#8220;inexpensive day out&#8221; for someone on a fixed income.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been to a casino lately, you&#8217;ve no doubt seen them, senior citizens piling out of buses and dashing for the slot machines. And let&#8217;s not forget, bingo, and state and national lottery games galore daily numbers, Mega Million Jackpot games and those very popular scratch off tickets, it seems that senior love those scratch off game.</p>
<p>For many suspected reasons age-related cognitive decline, boredom, and underlying depression &#8212; older adults seem to be more vulnerable to problem gambling than other age groups. And for seniors on fixed incomes, the prospects of ever fully recovering from gambling losses can be dim.</p>
<p>Most seniors will gamble wisely, but as with other groups, we know that a certain percentage will develop gambling problems in any age group, and the greater numbers of senior citizens who participate in gambling mean that there are greater numbers who are developing problems.</p>
<p>Like many things in life, euphoria may come with gambling, but it&#8217;s also self-destructive because even if you win millions of dollars, it doesn&#8217;t solve problems, you&#8217;re not any happier. You may have more things, but you still have to face the ravages of getting old</p>

<p>Gambling is socially acceptable in our society. Senior centers take bus trips to the casinos, but a certain percentage of all people who gamble will get hooked.</p>
<p>Some seniors who gamble do so within their means, but if it starts taking away money, time, or emotion from then it&#8217;s a problem.</p>
<p>Casino gambling helps fill the long days for many senior citizens, but when their gambling addiction becomes a problem, the results can be disastrous. Once they exhaust their retirement nest egg, that&#8217;s it.</p>
<p>The desire to fill time is just one factor that makes older adults particularly vulnerable. Often, they have disposable income. Some are bored or depressed, their children having grown, perhaps a spouse having died. For many, the sedentary nature of casino gambling, the sitting behind a slot machine is something they can still do for any length of time.</p>
<p>As a result, gambling is seen as a method of improving self-esteem in the elderly who are once again &#8220;included in the action&#8221; of a society that tends to exclude them and hide them away.</p>
<p>Older adults have two characteristics that make them attractive to the gaming industry, time on their hands, and for many, accumulated wealth. Gambling machines are fun and exciting, they don&#8217;t talk back and don&#8217;t require any special skills what so ever.</p>

<p>Before you know it, bank accounts become depleted or savings and retirement accounts are tapped into and sometimes drained. Some older Americans jeopardize their paid-off or nearly paid-off homes by turning to home equity lines of credit, or they incur heavy credit card debt. Retired citizens who have gambled away a pension have little time for a new start in life.</p>

Many people think that the current &#8220;fitness craze&#8221; is all (and only) about vanity. Vanity may well be part of it &#8211; after all, we all enjoy looking our best &#8212; but it&#8217;s by far not the most important reason to get in shape and stay physically fit. </p>

As the Marketing Officer of a web based business that assists families to find care for their loved ones, I can always tell when a caregiver who is calling is at a breaking point. Their voices are very stressed amd they are almost in a panic. Often, as they describe their situation, I can hear the tears welling up inside of them. unfortunately, some people wait too long and the stress of being a caregiver has already taken its toll, but it does not have to be that way.<br />If you are the primary caregiver of a person with Alzheimer&#8217;s,dementia,or other serious illness, you need to be very careful not to let the situation overwhelm you. While this sounds easier said than done, there are steps you can take to prevent burnout. Here are a few points that can help.<br /> 1.<strong>Look for help</strong>.Allow others to help and don&#8217;t feel that you have to be the one to do everything. There are numerous ways to get help for your loved one depending on your needs,location and financial situation. Here are a few:<br /> a.Contact the Office on Aging and ask about respite programs. Most counties have programs that will pay for a limited number of hours of home care services, free of charge. These types of programs are designed to give you a break and allow you to get out of the house. <br /> b.If your loved one qualifies for Medicaid, there may be programs available which would pay for either home care or adult day care services.<br /> c.If your loved one has a serious illness, consider using hospice. You don&#8217;t have to wait until the illness is at the ends stages to get help.<br /> d.Ask relative or close friends to help you out.<br /> 2.<strong>Get some exercise</strong>.Exercse can help you reduce stress, keep your body strong, strengthen your immune system and simply make you feel good. Some of the best exercises are walking or biking. These are easy to do, get your heart rate into the aerobic zone, burn calories and give you a chance to clear your head. Some excellent mind/body exercises include yoga, tai chi and Qi gong. Make time to exercise and you will reap the rewards.<br /> 3.<strong>Eat well</strong>.Like exercise, eating a well balanced diet helps you feel good, helps avoid being sick and gives you the energy you need to be a caregiver.<br /> 4.<strong>Learn relaxation techniques</strong>.Deep breathing, meditation and some of the mind/body exercises mentioned above can be tremendously helpful. An easy breathing technique is to inhale through your nose for a count of four,filling your belly with air, not your chest.Hold your breath for a count of seven and then exhale through your mouth for a count of eight.This can really help calm the nerves when practiced regularly.<br /> 5.<strong>Get an adequate amount of sleep</strong>.The fastest way to get run down is never getting enough sleep. If you find you are caring for your loved one at night, try to hire a person for overnight if this is possible. If you have siblings, ask them to chip in financially if they are not able to share some of the actual hands-on care.<br />While it can be very difficult to do many of the suggestions listed above, you must understant that if you get run down and sick, the problem is greatly magnified. You must be firm in demanding time to care for yourself and most importantly, you must not feel guilty. You are doing a great and honorable thing by being a caregiver, but it must not completely take over your life.<br />If you don&#8217;t know where to turn, consider hiring a professional geriatric care manager. While they can be a bit costly, it is often money well spent, as their years of experience are focused on helping seniors and their families when in nee</p>

Some of them are subject to federal housing guidelines and accept only low income seniors, but most senior apartments offer apartment living and services designed specifically for independent, active seniors 55 and older. <p>Is it safe for elderly people to exercise? Or is the risk of falls and other injuries too great? The benefits of your elderly parents exercising can far outweigh the risks. Almost all older people safely exercise and can also benefit from additional physical activity, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Regular exercise in the elderly helps protect from chronic disease, improves mood and lowers chances of injury.</p>
<p>Even elderly people with chronic illnesses can exercise safely. Many medical conditions are improved with exercise, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure and obesity.</p>
<p>Regular exercise provides a myriad of health benefits in your mom and dad, including improvements in blood pressure, diabetes, lipid profile, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and neuro-cognitive function.</p>
<p>With age, the body does take a little longer to repair itself, but moderate physical activity is good for people of all ages and of all ability levels.</p>
<p>Here are some of the functions that exercising on a regular basis improves:</p>
<p><strong>Immune Function</strong> – The elderly person&#8217;s body is able to fight off infection and sickness more easily and more quickly. Recovery from illness should be less strenuous.</p>
<p><strong>Cardio-Respiratory and Cardiovascular Function</strong> – Regular physical activity lowers risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. If the elderly person has hypertension, exercise will lower blood pressure.</p>
<p><strong>Bone Density/Osteoporosis</strong> – Exercise protects against loss in bone mass. Better bone density will reduce the risk of osteoporosis and lowers risk of falling and broken bones.</p>
<p><strong>Gastrointestinal Function</strong> – Regular exercise promotes the efficient elimination of waste and encourages digestive health. </p>
<p><strong>Chronic Conditions and Cancer</strong> – Regular physical activity lowers risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, high cholesterol management and arthritis pain.</p>
