<p>Continuing care retirement communities have become very popular in recent years, because a retiree can stay in the same location even as their healthcare and living assistance needs change.  These communities offer several levels of assistance ranging from independent living to assisted living to nursing home care.  Instead of having to move to a different facility when your needs change, you simply move to a different wing of the community.  Continuing care does requires a large payment upfront in addition to monthly fees, but with the peace of mind it provides many people find the cost worthwhile. </p>
<p>An assisted living facility is another option worth considering if your elderly relative can no longer live completely independently, but they are healthy enough that they do not require skilled nursing services.  Assisted living facilities typically have individual apartments that may have a kitchenette, and generally offer onsite staff around the clock, group dining and activity programs.  Some facilities also have additional services such as housekeeping, transportation, assistance with daily living activities, exercise programs, medication management and laundry.  There may be some nursing and medical services available as well, but they will come with an extra fee. </p>
<p>If you have an elderly loved one living on their own who is in good health and doesn’t expect to have urgent medical needs in the near future, there are also senior citizens housing facilities that offer completely independent living.  These facilities are often in scenic locations and offer a social community where a senior will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities, and they can come and go as they please.  With so many different housing options, you and your parent or relative should be able to find the ideal living situation.</p>

<p>Is declining eyesight apart of getting older? Well the answer to that question is yes and no. for us older Americans who fail to get the proper preventive care, our vision will continue to get worse with age. Most of us can expect by age 65 to have some sort of eye impairment, but with a proactive mindset toward preserving our eyesight we can off set the inevitable. Most importantly, never assume that your vision irregularities are just a regular process of getting older.</p>

<p>Preventive eye care is crucial to maintaining good eyesight. See your eye doctor once a year and protect your eyes from the suns ultraviolet rays by wearing quality sun glasses.</p>

<p>Some of the most common eye disorders that affect us seniors are diabetic eye disease and cataracts.</p>

<p>Diabetic Eye Disease: Diabetic eye disease should be taken very seriously, it can actually cause blindness. Many of us with diabetes mellitus may not even be aware that we have the disease. The sudden shifts and changes in blood sugar can cause vision to become very blurry. To combat and possibly prevent diabetic eye disease we should always strive to maintain a proper weight with regular exercise and good healthy eating. Also stay away from smoking at all times</p>

<p>Cataracts: Cataracts should not be taken lightly; the disease clouds the lens in the eye that affects our vision. As we get older we sometimes develop protein that bundles together and clouds a small area of the lens which over time can grow even bigger and seriously impair our vision. Some symptoms are bad night vision and blurry vision. Fortunately, cataracts can be removed with surgery if necessary.</p>

<p>Nevada has a Disability RX Vision benefit program. The program was developed to give low income seniors and those with verifiable disability assistance with the cost of prescriptions and medications. To be eligible for the program participants must be 62 or older and have one year of continuous residency prior to the date of application in Nevada.</p>

<p>Don’t take your eyesight for granted, so many of us fail to realize the beauty and importance of good vision. Good vision plays the most important role in our every day life, and failure to keep our eyesight in moderate condition can be devastating. <p>Senior Centers are performing a growing role in helping older Americans to realize greater independence by offering access to the Aging Network and other services. Information gathered from these centers on their effectiveness is extremely important.</p>
<p>&#13;Senior Centers are places where senior citizens can come together to help build community awareness of their needs and interests. These centers are best sites for community based health promotion activities as well as a convenient place to make and meet new friends and strengthen social networks.</p>
<p>&#13;There are more than 6,000 Senior Centers that receive some funding support from the Older Americans Act through service contracts from programs activities that were awarded by State and Area Agencies. These centers are vital in the aging network because they believe that senior citizens continue to function as viable, critical participants in our society.</p>
<p>&#13;Senior Centers offer a unique combination of enrichment programs and care services for people aged 60 years old or over. There are numerous services that are offered to the senior citizens in the United States, which includes the congregate meals, fitness and transportation, arts and crafts. They offer over 30 hours of exercise each week and different dance classes and different classes according to the seniors&#8217; interest. They also give travel programs in which wonderful local trips and extended tours are offered to the senior citizens to museums, theater shows and Bay area cities.</p>
<p>&#13;The senior centers also provide exciting social activities which include international themed luncheon, golf and tennis socials, card playing, monthly birthday luncheon, bingo and many more. These Senior Centers help their members to find resources in the community that assist them to continue to remain independent and safe in their homes. They also give legal services to their members. There are also programs offered to the senior citizens that will assist them in paying their monthly costs and other costs in Medicare prescription drug coverage.</p>
<p>&#13;The senior centers also provide in home care programs that may include companionship, meal preparation, personal care, grooming and light housekeeping duties that will promote freedom, self-care and pride to its member. Some Senior Centers run an Adult Daycare center that provides socialization, crafts and supervision to their loved ones outside the home as well as a breathing space for the caregiver.</p>
<p>&#13;Senior Centers also encourage their members to become active in community service, to become a volunteer in some assignment that will match their skills and their interests. They will serve in different types of non-profit organizations or public agencies. These activities will put their skills and life experiences into effect in their community and help become a part of a growing family of caring, talented individuals that will make a difference in their lives and in their community.</p>
<p>&#13;The heritage of senior centers and their role in the community represents more than 50 years of tradition. The services in these senior centers may vary but their commitments to support the frail senior citizens to maintain their independence and health in their homes and communities that will give them comfort and act as workable and important members in the society despite their age are very remarkable.</p>
